Position Title:  Senior Diesel Mechanic

Reports To:  Terminal Manager

Supervises:  Mechanics, Maintenance

Job Summary:  Senior Diesel Mechanic supervises the day to day operations of the garage / shop area and is responsible for coordinating workflow to mechanics and maintenance staff, inspecting equipment, supervising repairs, maintaining clean and safe operating condition of the shop.

Quality Responsibilities

  • Perform repairs on class A diesel trucks, as well as trailers – including flatbed, step deck, double drop, dry van, and curtain sides
  • Conduct regular preventative maintenance on service trucks, including inspection, tire rotation and oil changes
  • Maintain parts inventory and cleanliness in the shop
  • Collaborate with repair team to diagnose problems and plan repairs
  • Perform regular diagnostic tests on trucks
  • Maintain accurate records of each repair performed
  • Determines vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts
  • Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules; installing component and part upgrades; controlling corrosion; completing winterization procedures
  • Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems
  • Maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting
  • Maintains vehicle records
  • Keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock and verifying receipt
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading and understanding technical and regulation publications
  • Scheduling and completing recurring inspections and repairs to remain in compliance standards for both shop (OSHA) and vehicles (DOT)

Essential Responsibilities

  • Oversee mechanics and maintenance staff schedules and work orders
  • Evaluate mechanics work and performance
  • Ensure Safety and Compliance practices
  • Oversee, maintain, and be responsible for shop inventory
  • Keep track of time/inventory on all work orders
  • Conflict resolution
  • Parking enforcement
  • Yard management
  • Perform all scheduled repairs and regulated maintenance
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems
  • Installation of parts, shop supplies and equipment as necessary
  • Diagnose and repair AC systems
  • Keeping shop floor clean from dirt, grease & spills
  • Report any known issues in a timely manner
  • Provide recommendations to management pertaining to facilities, safety, and opportunities for improvement

Other Duties:

  • Participate in meetings as required
  • Interaction with multiple departments as required
  • Occasionally assist mechanics w/ light repairs and other mechanical duties
  • Perform additional tasks as requested by management

Physical Demands / Workplace Setting:

  • Must be physically able to:
    • Sit & stand for extended periods of time
    • Use hands/fingers to effectively operate computer system
    • Reach with hands/arms
    • Communicate clearly
    • Have clear vision up to 20’
    • Lift up to 100 lbs.

Requirements:

  • CDL License and/or valid driver license
  • Diesel Engine repair training or equal experience
  • Excellent knowledge of machinery and hydraulic, electrical, and other systems and their components
  • Aptitude in using various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers etc.) and precision measurement tools (e.g. calipers)
  • Ability to follow established procedures and practices and read instruction, blueprints etc.
  • A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines
  • A problem-solving ability
  • Able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds with or without assistance
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical
  • Experience using hand, electrical and air tools
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings
  • Written and verbal communication skills
